Optimist International History

In 1911, a group of men gathered in Buffalo, New York with the purpose of beginning a new organization which would have the following goals:

1. To develop Optimism as a philosophy of life
2. To promote an active interest in good government and civic affairs
3. To inspire respect for the law
4. To promote patriotism and work for international accord among all people.

After some years women were encouraged to join the organization and by 1973 they selected the motto   "Friend of Youth", which is still in use today.  One of the goals of the organization was to aid and encourage the development of youth in the belief that the giving of one's self in service to others will advance the well-being of humankind.
